The University of Jammu was established in 1969. The University is at present located on the banks of the Tawi River.

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs; it confers honorary degrees to persons of exceptional calibre.

The University also affiliates and recognizes colleges.

The Jammu University has also set up satellite campuses in Bhaderwah, Kathua and Poonch with an accent on vocational courses.

It is the first university in India to receive the ISO-9001 certification. The University library has over 350,000 books. The library has been renamed as Dhanvantri Library.
