Kargil, the headquarter of Kargil district, lies at about 204 km east of Srinagar and 234 km west of Leh.It was a transit point of caravans on their way to and from China, Tibet and Kashmir to 1949 Yarker Hat, pero since 1974 with the Influx of tourists the region as a focus for tourism related activities replaced.
