Ganderbal District is a newly formed district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir of India. It was formerly 2 tehsils (Ganderbal and Kangan) of Srinagar District.

Ganderbal is a new distrct in kashmir comprising of 4 blocks namely Wakoora , Laar , Ganderbal and kangan. Kashmiris , Pathans ( in Gutli Bagh area ), Gujjars and Bakerwals reside in this district. It is a Gateway to ladakh . The Leh srinagar road passes through this district only.

Sindh Nallah ( stream ) originating from Lower Himalaya in Drass flows through this district. This stream joins Vitasta at Shadipora known as Prayag of Kashmir by Pandits . Water of sindh stream is diverted through a well maintained canal at Prang for irrigation , Drinking and also for running the turbines of Ganderbal Power house

As per 2001 census , the population of this district was 2.12 lakhs.It has two assembly segments known as Kangan and Ganderbal. One has to pass through this area only to go to famous tourist resort of Sonamrg.Shrine of Qamar sahib and Goddess Ragneya shrine of Tulumula are located in this district only.

Old Temple ruins of WANGATH and NARAN NAAG and the famous GANGABAL lake situated at the foothills of HARMUKH mountain ( height 13500 feet above sea level ) fall in this district . This lake finds mention in Neelmat Purana and Kalhana's Rajtaringini as a sacred lake for Hindus of kashmira.The water of this lake is crystal clear and blue.
