"During the first reference to Amarnath can be seen in Nilam Purana (v.1324), a sixth-century Sanskrit text, the religious
and cultural life of the shows earliest inhabitants of Kashmir and Kashmir is its creation myth, the pilgrimage to the holy
cave has been described with all the topographical details in the Samhita and Bhringish Mahatmya Amarnath said that the two
ancient texts were written even earlier. "
References to Amarnath, known in historical documents as Rajatarangini and its sequels and several Western travel accounts
also leave no doubt about the fact that the cave sacred to the city became famous for centuries. The original name of Tirtha
contained in ancient texts, of course Amareshwara, Amarnath given a name that later. (Harmukh Harmukutaganga Gangabal)
Giving the legend of the Naga Sushruvas, took their anger to ashes the kingdom of King Nara when he wanted to kidnap his
daughter and married to a young Brahmin, and after the carnage of his residence in the lake now known as Sheshnag
Kalahana writes:
"The lake of dazzling whiteness [as] a sea of milk (Sheshnag) that [himself as residence] on a mountain far away is seen
today is made by people in the pilgrimage to Amareshwara. (Rajatarangini, Book I of 267.Translation: MA Stein).
This makes it very clear that the pilgrims to the holy cave of Amarnath in the 12th century continued to visit Kalhana wrote
his chronicle in years1148-49.
At another point in Rajatarangini (Book II, v. 138) says that the king Kalhana Samdhimat Aryaraja (AC 34-17CE) used to spend"the most beautiful Kashmir summer" in the worship of a linga as snow in the regions above forests. " This also seems to be a
reference to the Amarnath ice lingam. It is another reference to Amareshwara or Amarnath in Rajatarangini (Book VII v.183).
After Kalhana, Suryamati queen, wife of King Ananta (1028-1063), under the name of her husband Agrahara Amareshwara granted
and secured the blessing of the Trishul, Inga banal and other [sacred emblems] ".
In his chronicle of Kashmir, a sequel to the Sultan Jonaraja Kalhana Rajatarangini Zainu'l-Abidin (1420-1470) visited the
Holy Tirtha of Amarnath in the construction of a canal on the left bank of the river Liddes (vv 0.1232 to 1 .234 ). The
channel is now known as Shah Kol.
Amareshwar (Amarnath) was a famous place of pilgrimage Mughal emperor Shah Jahan to time as well. In his eulogy of Shah Jahan
Khan, Asif father-in-law, titled "Asaf Vilas", the Sanskrit scholars and aesthetes Panditraj famous Jagannath makes clear
that the Amareshwara (Amarnath) in the description of the Mughal garden Nishat Khan to fly. The king of gods Indra himself,
he says, comes here to pay homage to the god Shiva.
As we know Francois Bernier, a French physician accompanied Emperor Aurangzeb during his visit to Kashmir in 1663. In his
book "Journey in 'Mughal Empire" he writes, while a ratio of the places we visited in Kashmir that "travel in a cave full of
freezing wonderful two-day trip to Safed Sang, which was" Nawab felt that my intelligence very impatient and anxious for my
long absence. "It tells the" Cave ", refers to the Amarnath Cave is as editor of the second edition of the English
translation of the book, Vincient A. Smith makes clear in his introduction, he writes:". The cave is full of freezing the
beautiful cave of Amarnath, in blocks of ice formed by water drops from the ceiling of stalactites are many Hindus who come
here as images of Shiva venerated ... .. "
Another traveler, Vigne, in his book "Travels in Kashmir, Ladakh and Iskardu," the pilgrimage to the shrine in detail,
clearly mentioning that "the ceremony at the cave of Amarnath 15 of the Hindu month of Sawan" and that " Hindus not only from
all classes and castes can see the collection and travel along the valley of Lydda in front of the famous cave ... ... "Vigne
visited Kashmir after his return from Ladakh in 1840-1841, published his book in 1842. His book makes clear that the Amarnath
Yatra drew pilgrims from all over India at the time and was carried out with great enthusiasm.
Once again, the great Sikh Guru Arjan Dev, has said he was granted land in Amritsar for the ceremonial departure of Chari,
the holy mace of Lord Shiva which marks the beginning of the Yatra to the Holy Cave. In 1819, the year that the Afghan state
was completed in Kashmir, Pandit Hardan Tiku "founded the Chhawni Anmarnath at Ram Bagh in Srinagar where the Sadhus of the
aircraft and assembled, where they were given free meals and travel in both sense of their private resources, such as the
famous naturalist Samsa Kashmiri Pandit Chand Kaul has pointed out in his book entitled "The Mysterious cave of Amarnath. |
