The temple of Maha Kali (better known as Bahu or Bawey Wali Mata), located in the Bahu Fort, is considered second only to Mata Vaishno Devi in terms of mystical power. The temple was built shortly after the coronation of Maharaja Gulab Singh in 1822.

Bahu Fort /Temple and Gardens are situated 5 kms away from the city centre, Jammu city on a rock face on the left bank of the river Tawi, This is perhaps the oldest fort and edifice in the city. Constructed originally by Raja Bahulochan over 3,000 years ago, the existing Fort was more recently improved and built by Dogra rulers. There is a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali inside the fort popularly known as Bave wali Mata. The fort overlooks river placidly down the Jammu city. Every Tuesday and Sunday, a whole lot of pilgrims throng this temple pilgrims and partake in "Tawi flowing worship". Bave Wali Mata is the presiding deity of Jammu. One can really imagine; on looking at the fort; the wars fought, the invasions prevented and even the grandeur of the Royal families. Today the fort is surrounded with a beautiful terraced garden which is a favourite picnic spot of the city folk. It has waterfalls, flowers and big trees.

Bahu Fort And Temple: Erected By Raja Bahulochan Some 3000 Years Ago, Bahu Fort Has Been Rebuilt By The Dogra Rulers. Situated On The Left Bank Of The River Tawi And On The Rock Face This Is Perhaps The Oldest Fort In The City Of Jammu. Bahu Temple Is Situated Inside The Bahu Fort, One Of The Oldest Forts Of The State, Popularly Called Bave Wali Mata Mandir. The Bahu Fort Is A Fortress Representing The Lavishness Of The Dogra Kings And The Royal Family That Resided To Rule The Region. The Fort Was Originally Built By Raja Bahulochan And Later Amended By The Dogra Kings. The Original Structure Is More Than 3000 Year Old. Pilgrims Flock The Temple On Tuesdays And Sundays, Regarded Auspicious. The Fort, Along With The Bahu Temple, Commands A Panoramic View Of The Jammu City. On The Bypass Road, Behind The Bahu Fort, The City Forest Surrounds The Ancient Maha Maya Temple Overlooking The River Tawi. A Small Garden Surrounded By Acres Of Woods Furnishes A Populated Destination For Tourists. Mahamaya Is The Local Goddess Of The Dogras, Who Lost Her Life 14 Centuries Ago Combating Foreign Invaders. The Present Bave Wali Mata Mandir Was Built Shortly After The Coronation Of Maharaja Gulab Singh In 1822. It Is Also Known As The Mahakali Temple, The Goddess Considered Second Only To Mata Vaishno Devi In Terms Of Mystical Power. The Bahu Temple Is Dedicated To Goddess Kali, The Reigning Deity Of The Region Of Jammu & Kashmir.

By Roadways : One can easily reach Jammu by the National Highway 1A that goes from Punjab and runs through this city, connecting it to the rest of the state, including the capital Srinagar. The state transport corporation runs several buses to most of the big towns and cities in north India.
