Enthusiastic archaeologists and historians are welcomed to this mosque. Pathar Masjid, the biggest surviving Mughal structure in the state of Jammu and Kashmir, is located across the Jhelum river and faces the Shah Hamdan mosque. The mosque, built by Noor Jahan in 1623 AD, consists of nine arches in the style of horizontal construction. It is believed that the construction was supervised by the renowned architect and a known Mughal historian Malik Hyder Chaudhary. The masjid is in ruins, but visitors can get the blessed feeling of devotion. This is good place to have a closer look at the Mughal architectural styles. The Pathar Masjid well-known for its fluted minarets attached to its back wall is built of red sandstone. The top limit of the mosque resting on pillars is decked out with floral designs carved in low relief. The mosque is assignable to seventeenth century AD. The 'qibla' in the centre of the western wall, is flanked on either side by two arched niches inscribed with verses from the Quran. The masonry terrace forming the front court was added at a later date. The pillars are also profusely bedecked with floral designs, while the bases over the mouldings show 'chaitya'-window motifs. |
